Kenyan duo of Commonwealth 3000m Steeplechase gold medalist Jackline Chepkoech and World Under 20 Steeplechase champion Faith Cherotich have been named among the five nominees for the World Athletics Women’s Rising Star Award.

Apart from winning gold in the 3000m steeplechase race during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Chepkoech also emerged the Kenya 3000m steeplechase national champion and Brussels Diamond League winner.

Cherotich on the other hand also added two more accolades on her name after winning gold at the World Under 20 championships in Cali, Colombia, by winning the local World Under 20 Championships trials and finishing third at the Diamond League final.

“World Athletics is delighted to announce the five nominees for the 2022 Women’s Rising Star Award, which will recognise this year’s best U20 athlete at the World Athletics Awards 2022,” read a statement from the global federation.

It continued: “The nominations reflect the many standout performances that the sport has witnessed this year, at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 and other events around the world.”

The winner of the 2022 Women’s Rising Star Award will be selected by an international panel of experts and be announced on World Athletics’ social media platforms in early December.

The other three nominees in the list are South Africa’s Mine De Klerk who is the World Under 20 shot put champion, Jamaican Kerrica Hill who is the World Under 20 100m hurdles champion and Serbia’s Adriana Vilagos who is the World Under 20 Javelin throw champion.
