Kenya to battle wounded Tunisia on day two of Billie Jean King Cup action

Kenya will be hoping to keep their promotion dreams on track when they face off with Tunisia on the second day of the Billie Jean King Cup.

Captained by African Games Champion Okutoyi, Kenya had an easy day one as they strolled past Mauritius 3-0 in their opening Group B fixture on Monday, June 10, 2024, at the Nairobi club.

Okutoyi paraded her class with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tejaswini Jessoo while teammate Cynthia Cheruto also dominated the other singles match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Anna Chan Kwai Siong.

The doubles team of Roselida Asumwa and Alicia Owegi’s 6-1, 6-1 victory made sure Kenya closed the opening day on top of pool B.

Kenya vs Burundi

Kenya will today face off with Tunisia who lost to Burundi in the opening round of matches. Tunisia who were seeded second coming into the tournament were expected to make light work of 11th placed Burundi when the two sides met.

Sada Nahimana’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Tunisian Chiraz Bechri canceled the North Africans’ first singles win setting up a tiebreaker in the doubles match. The Burundian duo of Nahimana and Kitambala defeated Bechri and Lamis Haouas with scores of 6-2, 4-6, and 10-6.

Kenya’s clash with Tunisia will highlight day two action, taking the center Court in the 10 am action.

Format

 There will be a two-stage round-robin format. Three pools of four teams will compete on Monday-Wednesday.

Teams finishing in the same position in the first pool stage will compete in a second round-robin on Thursday-Saturday.

The three pool winners from the first stage will compete for one promotion place. Teams finishing in fourth place in the first round-robin will compete to avoid relegation.

One promoted; one relegated.
