The Kenya Lionesses booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the Africa Women’s Sevens 2025 after an unbeaten opening day at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

The national women’s rugby sevens team finished the day with a commanding 37-0 win over Ghana, following an earlier 44-0 victory against the Ivory Coast.

From the first whistle, the Lionesses dominated play. Grace Adhiambo opened the scoring after a well-coordinated team move, giving Kenya early momentum.

Ghana tried to slow the game, but a crucial infringement handed Kenya a lineout opportunity. Naomi Amuguni secured the ball and linked with Freshia Oduor, who scored Kenya’s second try.

Kenya kept the pressure high, forcing errors and maintaining control of possession. Right before halftime, Janet Okello sliced through the Ghanaian defence to score the third try, sending the hosts into the break with a strong 22-0 lead.

The second half saw Kenya continue their relentless attack. Okello completed her brace after a quick passing sequence, stretching the lead further.

Moreen Muritu added another try, while debutant Nelly Chikombe closed the scoring after a Ghanaian mistake, sealing the 37-0 win. The result mirrored Kenya’s dominance over Ghana in last year’s tournament, when they won 41-0.

Lionesses eye quarterfinal glory

The Lionesses now top Group B and will face Zimbabwe in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Ghana, meanwhile, will meet defending champions South Africa in the other quarterfinal clash.

The tournament continues over two days, with the main cup quarterfinals set for Sunday. Kenya’s strong start puts them in a favourable position to reach the semifinals, and the Lionesses are aiming to win the Africa Women’s Sevens title on home soil.

Fans at RFUEA Grounds witnessed a confident performance from Kenya, with the team showing sharp handling, speed, and composure under pressure.
