KCB vaults broken
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League has literally been thrown down to the wire after front-runners Gor Mahia and Tusker won their respective fixtures yesterday.
Whilst Gor compounded the woes of FC Talanta with a 2-1 win, Tusker overpowered KCB 1-0 in a highly charged game in Ruaraka.
The result leaves Gor leading the standings with 59 points followed by Tusker who have collected 57 points.
With both teams on tenterhooks as pertains the title, red-hot Gor striker Benson Omala is a heart-beat away from breaking the goal scoring record of the club’s great Maurice “Sonyi” Ochieng’ after he struck a brace in K’ogalo’s come-from-behind victory over a rather wasteful Talanta.
Omala has struck 25 goals thus far in the campaign which is one shy of the ones plundered by Ochieng’ while playing for K’Ogalo in 1976.
Omala, who has been overlooked by Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat, was in his true element as he was a menace to FC Talanta for a lengthy part of the match despite the losers having taken a shock 18th minute lead.
Gor coach Jonathan McKinstry said he was content with the result although he felt the team should have secured a bigger victory had the strikers been a little bit keen upfront.
“We created chances but a win is a win and we hope to build on that in the remaining fixtures. We are leading the standings and have a reputation to protect. There is no room for errors,” offered McKinstry.
In Ruaraka, Tusker prevailed over a stubborn KCB in a highly physical game with Mike Oduor’s 66th minute goal making all the difference.
Tusker coach Robert Matano expressed gratitude for his team having beaten a team that is in the frontline for the title
“It was not an easy game as you may have seen and although we missed many chances we managed to convert one into a goal. Of course, we have to fight well in our next game because there is no chance to make amends once you get it wrong,” said Matano.
He added: “I think that if you want to go far from here now, you have to win every game and that is what we shall focus on,” The remaining matches are very important. They are key to the title prospects.
Still at Kasarani Annex, Kakamega Homeboyz settled for a barren draw with Nairobi City Stars.
Towards the end of the first half, Homeboyz custodian Farouk Shikalo was forced into saves to thwart several scoring attempts by the marauding City Stars forwards.
Homeboyz also had their fair scoring chances with Felicien Okanda and Ambrose Sifuna a menace to City Stars defence.
