KCB face off with Leos for Driftwood 7s title
KCB Rugby face off against Strathmore Leos in the 2025 Driftwood 7s final at the Mombasa Sports Club after overcoming fierce semi-final opposition on Sunday, July 27, 2025.
The Bankers booked their spot in the championship decider with a hard-fought 10-5 win over rivals Kabras Sugar RFC in a tightly contested semi-final clash. Spearheaded by head coach Dennis Mwanji and bolstered by recent addition George Ooro, KCB capitalised on early momentum and tactical discipline to edge out the Sugarmen.
Floyd Wabwire was the standout for KCB, bagging a brace of tries in the first half. His first came through a powerful break on the wing, outpacing Victor Otieno to touch down. Moments later, Wabwire struck again, diving over in the corner to make it 10-0 at halftime. Kabras narrowed the deficit through Lamec Ambetsa after Bob Muhati was sin-binned, but they were denied a chance at a restart, confirming KCB’s path to the final.
Strathmore Leos, meanwhile, stormed into the final with a commanding 28-0 victory over Nakuru RFC. The students, who have shown impressive form throughout the tournament, dominated from the onset. Nygel Amaitsa opened the scoring after a slick offload from Barnabas Owuor. Further tries from Stansilaus Shikoli, Victor Mola, and a second from Amaitsa sealed an emphatic performance.
The Leos had earlier edged Nondies 15-10 in the quarter-finals, while KCB dismantled Menengai Oilers 29-0 to advance. Kabras had blanked MMUST 31-0 and Nakuru stunned defending champions Kenya Harlequins 19-17 in the quarters.

Ooro faces former team
The final between KCB and Strathmore Leos is expected to be thrilling not only for the title on offer but also for the personal narratives involved, none more compelling than that of George Ooro. The Kenya Sevens captain, who recently joined KCB from Strathmore, now face his former side in his debut tournament for the Bankers.
“It’s emotional but exciting. I respect my former teammates, but I’m here to give my all for KCB,” said Ooro, whose leadership has already added a new dimension to the Bankers’ setup.
With both teams unbeaten and playing high-tempo rugby, the 2025 Driftwood 7s final promises to be a classic. The game started began at 4:44 pm.
