Shujaa captain George Ooro to make his KCB debut at Driftwood 7s
Kenya Sevens captain George ‘Japolo’ Ooro is set to make his much-anticipated debut for KCB Rugby Club at the Driftwood 7s in Mombasa this weekend. The tournament, held at the Mombasa Sports Club, kicks off on Saturday, July 26, 2025, to Sunday, and marks the start of the 2025 National Sevens Circuit.
Ooro recently joined KCB from Strathmore Leos, ending a four-year stay with the university side. His move is seen as a major boost for the Bankers, who are aiming to reclaim the Driftwood 7s title, which they last won six years ago. His inclusion in the travelling squad has already sparked excitement among fans and pundits alike.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Ooro said he is looking forward to the new chapter in his rugby journey.
“It’s a good move for me. I’m excited and eager to prove myself. KCB is a big side, and I believe my game will take the next step,” he said.

Ooro embraces new challenge
Ooro praised KCB’s professional setup and high level of competition as key reasons behind his decision to switch clubs.
“As much as Strathmore is a rugby powerhouse, KCB is a step higher. The training and competition are more intense. I am up to the challenge,” he added.
He also admitted that playing against Strathmore, if the teams meet, will be emotional.
“It will be strange to face my brothers. I left without achieving all our goals, but at the end of the day, it’s a win for rugby.”
The KCB squad for the Driftwood 7s includes notable names such as Vincent Onyala, Elvis Olukusi, Festus Shiasi, and Floyd Wabwire. Several players will also be making their debuts, alongside Ooro, as the Bankers aim to start the circuit strongly.
KCB head coach Curtis Olago will be counting on Ooro’s leadership and experience to guide the team through the tough competition. With the Bankers chasing a record fifth National Sevens Circuit title, Ooro’s presence could be the edge they need.
Ooro, who captains the national Sevens side Shujaa, rose to prominence after his debut in the 2021 HSBC World Sevens Series and was later named captain in 2024.
