Police officers in Busia County have intercepted a vehicle transporting 1,150 litres of suspected illicit ethanol along the Busia–Malaba road after the driver fled during a police pursuit.

The operation was conducted on Saturday, June 27, 2026, by officers attached to Malaba Police Station who were on routine patrol in the Roiko area of Malaba Town.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers flagged down a black Toyota Voxy for inspection. However, the driver ignored orders to stop and sped off, triggering a chase.

The suspect later abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot, evading arrest.

A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of 1,150 litres of suspected illicit ethanol, which police believe was being transported illegally.

The vehicle was towed to Malaba Police Station, where it has been detained alongside the recovered consignment as investigations continue.

“The suspect later abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot. A search of the vehicle revealed 1,150 litres of suspected ethanol. The vehicle was towed to the Malaba Police Station yard, and the recovered exhibits were secured as evidence. Investigations are ongoing to verify the vehicle’s ownership and to track down the fleeing driver,” NPS stated.

Police said efforts are underway to establish the ownership of the vehicle and to trace and arrest the driver.

The National Police Service commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and commitment to combating crime.

The service also appealed to members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities through the nearest police station or via the emergency numbers 999 and 911, the toll-free #FichuaKwaDCI line (0800 722 203), or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

The seizure is part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to crack down on the illegal production, transportation and distribution of illicit alcohol and related substances, which pose significant public health and security risks.
