Kakamega County will host the 2021 edition of the Sports Personality of the Year Awards (Soya) after edging out other counties that had expressed interest.

While paying a courtesy call on Kakamega Social Services and Sports executive Kassim Were on Monday, Soya chairman Paul Tergat revealed that he was satisfied with good sporting infrastructure in the county.

“Kakamega County has become a good example to other counties in terms of developing sporting facilities that will help many youths to venture into sports,” said Tergat.

“We, therefore, want to offer our gratitude and believe that by hosting the event, Kakamega will continue helping nurturing talents,” said Tergat.

In his response, Were revealed his excitement at seeing Kakamega being given the opportunity to host one of the major events in the sporting calendar in Kenya.

“I want to single out Tergat for praise for coming up with this noble idea that identifies and recognises the efforts of our sportsmen,” said Were.

“It’s a great honour and privilege as a county to be offered this great opportunity to host the event and I would urge sportsmen and women from this county to work even harder so that they can be among those to be awarded.

“We will work closely with SOYA together with the other stakeholders in this industry to ensure that the event will be a big success compared to the previous ones,” Were said.

The event is scheduled for January 2022.
