Juja-based Chema Volleyball storms the GMT finals in Rwanda

Chema Volley Club, a budding team hailing from Juja, is set to compete in the finals of the ongoing 25th edition of the Rwanda Genocide Memorial Tournament (GMT) on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
The club booked a historic spot in the finals after edging fancied Kenya Ports Authority in the semifinal tie played on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
A dominant 3-1 win over the Portmens secured the team’s passage to the finals, setting the stage for an electric finale against Rwanda’s REG in the finals at 4:00 pm.

KPA eliminated KEPLAR VC in a five-set thriller match to set up an all-Kenyan semi-final, which, however, ended with them coming up short against Chema.
The Jeremiah Mukopi-coached team went for the jugular early against KPA to win the first set 25-23. They built on the gained momentum to claim the second set before a resurgent KP claimed the third set in an emphatic 18-25 score.
They slammed the door on the Dockers in the decisive fourth set to seal their final berth.
In what has been a thrilling performance in the tournament, Chema battled through five tough sets to edge past Chazpir of Uganda 3-2 to top a tough-looking Pool D and secure passage to the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s KPA will seek to regroup ahead of a third-place playoff against Chazpir from Uganda.
In the women’s category, the Police Women Volleyball Team will face Rwanda’s Revenue Authority (RRA) in the finals.
Rwandan genocide
The clash will see Kenyan Meldina Sande of Police eyeing yet another trophy with the Rwanda club, whom she led to the national title in May.
The GMT tournament kicked off on Friday, June 20, and will conclude this Sunday.
The tournament honours volleyball community members killed in the 1994 Genocide.
