Has Kenya’s boxer Zarika been neglected by her government?
Despite Kenya’s Fatuma ‘Iron Fist” Zarika successfully defending the World Boxing Federation (WBF) World Super Featherweight title after outpointing Fatuma Omari of Tanzania, there is still protracted apprehension by the stakeholders of the sport towards the government in as far as remunerating successful pugilists is concerned.
In her own words prior to the highly hyped bout at Broad Walk Mall in Parklands last Friday night, Zarika said she felt unappreciated by the government notwithstanding the fact that she had both the World Boxing Council and WBF titles under her belt.
In a nutshell, Zarika said the government appears to give much priority to triumphant athletes at the sake of boxers who are equally doing well while on international duty.
“We are all carrying Kenya’s banner in our respective fields and I fail to see just why boxing is not given attention like athletics. I personally have worked really hard to get where I’m but my achievements are records, just that,” bemoaned Zarika
