Harambee Stars forward Jonah Ayunga elated after inspiring St Mirren to maiden cup
Harambee Stars forward Jonah Ayunga has revealed his elation after leading St. Mirren FC to the Scottish League Cup, their first trophy in 12 years.
Ayunga, in arguably the best game of his career, took the final’s plaudits after his brace stunned Celtic 3-1 to lift the cup on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at Hampden Park.
Faith over fear
The club approached the decisive final on the rallying call of ‘Faith over Fear’ from coach Stephen Robinson.
The sense of belief proved crucial as an inspired Saints team hit two goals after Rio Hatate had cancelled out Marcus Fraser’s opener.
Ayunga came clutch with two goals at either end of the halves to ensure the trophy comes to Paisley and end their decade-long wait without a major trophy.
“To get the chance to play in this, let alone win it and score, I could not imagine it any better.

“We said it before the game, and I was confident. I have been playing since I was 17; I am nearly 30, and this was the first Cup final I had a chance to win anything. It might be the last one, and we had to grab the chance when it came,” Ayunga told the BBC after the game.
Surviving the chop
Ayunga and St. Mirren, however, have to quickly shift focus to the league campaign, where their top-flight status remains at risk.
St. Mirren have endured a mixed run, with their hopes of securing a fourth consecutive top-six finish fading early.
They recently edged Dundee United 2-0 to end their nine-match winless run in the Scottish Premiership, but the fear of dropping looms.
“We are down there, and it is still early days in the league.”
“We know if we can stick a few results together, we can climb the table again; that is our aim,” he added.
