Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has urged Kenyans planning to participate in upcoming protests to remain peaceful and avoid destruction of property or attacks on others, saying constitutional rights must be exercised responsibly.

Speaking in Uasin Gishu on Sunday, June 22, 2026, Kihika noted that demonstrations have become a recurring event on June 25 every year but warned that any form of violence would amount to a loss of constitutional protection.

“Every year tumeona maandamano wa mwezi wa sita 25th ukifika. Na, this year is no different because tumewasikia sana wameendelea kupanga hiyo maandamano,” she said.

Constitutional rights

She acknowledged that Kenyans have a constitutional right to protest but emphasized limits to that right when it affects others.

“Tafadhali wenye mnatokea kufanya hiyo maandamano, it is your constitutional right. Lakini mkienda kuharibu mali ya wananchi, ama ku-injure anybody, that your right is, you no longer have that right,” Kihika said.

Kihika further said she was addressing residents of Uasin Gishu and expressed hope that no protests would take place in the region, arguing that government concerns had already been addressed.

“Kwa hivyo, mimi ningetaka kuongelesha watu wa hapa Uasin Gishu… I hope there are none, because every issue has been addressed.”

What is the agenda for the protest

She also referenced recent government interventions, including compensation measures for victims of previous unrest, and defended the Finance Bill, saying it had no provisions intended to harm citizens.

“Ata kama ni ile ya wale walioumia last time, mmeona vile President na Deputy wamefanya just this week na pesa imewekwa kando for compensation. Kama ni hiyo Finance Bill, hakuna kitu iliongezwa ya kuumiza wananchi.”
