Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has warned against violence and destruction of property during the planned June 25 protests, saying the government will maintain law and order while allowing peaceful expression.

Speaking in Uasin Gishu County on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Kindiki said the recent parliamentary debate on the Finance Bill had clarified public concerns and dismissed claims that the legislation introduced new taxes.

He said Members of Parliament had reviewed the budget process and found no evidence of hidden or new tax measures, adding that the government’s focus remains on development priorities such as roads, water, electricity, and other infrastructure.

“Ninataka niseme hivi, ya kwamba juzi kumekuwa na mjadala kule bungeni kuhusu mambo ya bajeti na ile sheria ambayo inasaidia bajeti ili itekelezwe. Kila mahali Rais anapoenda na wale ambao tuko kwa serikali, wananchi wametuambia wanataka barabara, wanataka maji, wanataka umeme, wanataka miundombinu mingi mbali mbali,” Kindiki said.

He said development projects depend on the national budget, which is supported by taxes collected under the Constitution.

“Hiyo maendeleo ambayo wananchi wanaitaji inatekelezwa kutokana na bajeti na kutokana na kodi ambayo serikali imekubaliwa na Katiba kuokota,” he said.

The Deputy President claimed that Parliament had already settled the debate on the Finance Bill, saying critics had failed to show evidence of any new taxes.

“Huo mjadala umekwisha… wameona ya kwamba hakuna vipengele ambavyo vimewekwa ili kuleta ushuru mpya,” he said.

Kindiki also dismissed accusations that the Finance Bill had triggered protests, arguing that shifting positions by some political actors showed inconsistency.

“Mimi Nashangaa kusikia kwamba wale wachochezi ambao walikuwa naitisha maandamano ati kwa sababu ile Finance Bill imeleta ushuru mpya… sasa wamegeuza mjadala,” he said.

He added that the Constitution protects the right to peaceful assembly, but not the destruction of property or violence during protests.

“Katiba imekubali mtu yoyote kujieleza, lakini hakuna ruhusa kuumiza haki za wengine, kuvunja maduka, kuumiza wananchi,” he said.

Kindiki warns against violence

Kindiki said the government would ensure security for all citizens during the protests, including traders, commuters, and ordinary Kenyans going about their daily work.

“Usalama wa kila mwananchi utahifadhiwa… usalama wa mfanyabiashara, mama sokoni, na msafiri utadumishwa,” he said. “Na mimi naongea nikiwa naibu rais wa Kenya na ujue zamani nilikuwa waziri wa usalama wa taifa. So I know what I am saying.”

He warned that law enforcement agencies would act to maintain order if protests turn violent, insisting that the state has a duty to protect life and property.

“Anywhere ile mambo ya wanataka kufanya wafanye, lakini hakuna kuumiza wanainchi,” he said.

Kindiki added a firm warning over the planned June 25 demonstrations, insisting that security agencies would not allow disorder.

“So on Thursday there will be no monkey business anywhere in the Republic of Kenya,” he said.

He further said anyone who chooses to protest must do so peacefully and return home without disrupting other people’s livelihoods.

“Mwenye anataka kupiga kelele pale mtaani apige kelele yake jioni aende nyumbani,” he said.

The remarks come amid rising political tension ahead of the June 25 anniversary protests, which are expected to feature memorial events, demonstrations, and public gatherings in several parts of the country.

Human rights groups say the protests commemorate victims of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations, while government officials have warned against violence or disruption of economic activity.
