FKF Golden Boot, Glove Race: Gor Mahia duo in leading pack as FKF PL action returns

By , November 24, 2023

As the Football Kenya Federation Premier League action returns after the international break, the Golden Boot and Golden Glove races are expected to attract attention.

Benson Omala, who made his way back to the Harambee Stars’ set-up and scored his maiden national goal against Seychelles, is leading the Golden Boot race with a gap of two goals. The former Kisumu Day Secondary School star, who missed last season’s award by a whisker, has scored seven goals in 11 games.

Kakamega Homeboyz’s Moses Shummah, who was not part of the Harambee Stars squad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and Seychelles, is second with five.

When Gor Mahia take on Muhoroni Youth at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, Omala hopes to score and widen the gap with his closest rivals. On the other hand, Shummah is expected to lead the line when Homeboyz encounter the Ulinzi Stars at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in their next game.

Bandari’s Derrick Nsimbabi has five goals and is joint-third on the log with Shummah. The Ugandan has been outstanding for the coastal side, as he has quite delivered when needed.

Four players have scored four goals for their respective teams: FC Talanta’s Erick Ombija, AFC Leopards’ Brian Yakhama, Francis Kahiro of KCB, and Kakamega Homeboyz’s Brian Eshihanda are joint fourth.

Golden Glove contest

In the Golden Glove race, Posta Rangers’ John Njau and Gor Mahia’s Kevin Omondi have kept seven clean sheets. Individually, the goalkeepers have been outstanding, even though their teams enjoy impressive form.

Rangers are leading with 22 points, a point ahead of Gor Mahia, and part of their good form is partly attributed to their goalkeepers.

K’Ogalo have had to depend on Omondi, who signed from Sofapaka before the campaign began, and the goalkeeper has so far impressed. Last season, the Premier League defending champions dominantly relied on Gad Mathews, who had been sidelined from previous actions by an injury.

Murang’a Seal’s Bonphas Munyasa has six clean sheets, while John Otieno of Bidco United, Bandari’s John Ochuka, Patrick Matasi of Police, and Talanta’s Isaiah Wakasala have five clean sheets to their names.

Kariobangi Sharks’ Bernard Jairo, Tusker’s Brian Bwire, and Stephen Ochieng of Ulinzi have four clean sheets, even though their sides have posted inconsistent performances.
