Ghost Mulee: Ruto’s incentive will drive Harambee Stars to finals
Former Harambee Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee has lauded President William Ruto’s incentive to the national football team, describing it as a “game-changer” that will shift the players’ focus from financial worries to on-pitch results during the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
Speaking on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, during an interview with a local TV station, Mulee said the monetary boost from the Head of State had helped “cool the nerves” of the players, creating an environment where their primary concern is performance.
“The incentive is something that is a game-changer for the players. The incentive that the President gave is just to cool the nerves of the players. Money is not everything, but it is a very good motivation. Now the players don’t think about money; they think about results,” Mulee said.
Delayed or unpaid dues
The veteran tactician noted that football in Kenya has historically struggled with issues of delayed or unpaid dues, making the president’s gesture a timely morale booster.
Mulee believes that with the unity and renewed energy around the team, Harambee Stars have what it takes to go all the way in the tournament.
“They just want results. Football in Kenya has been one of the worst sports in terms of payment. What I have seen with the team and the country has been united together; I believe that Harambee Stars will be in the finals,” he said.
Ruto’s incentives
President Ruto announced on Monday, August 11, 2025, that if the team beats Zambia in their next match on Sunday, each player will receive Ksh2.5 million.
This announcement comes after a series of generous rewards the team has already earned for their impressive performances.

So far, the Harambee Stars have received Ksh1 million each for their win against DR Congo, Ksh500,000 each after a draw with Angola, and another Ksh1 million per player following their recent 1-0 victory over Morocco.
“We’ve also agreed on rewards: a win against Zambia next Sunday will earn each player Ksh2.5 million,” President Ruto posted on his X account.
He also praised the team and stressed the importance of unity in Kenya’s success.
“Unity has always propelled us forward. We must never allow negativity, failure, or doubt to prevent us from reaching our full potential. If we believe in ourselves and refuse to let division or hate enter the equation, Kenya can become the great nation we all dream of,” he said.
