General Service Unit, Strathmore win as handball resumes
After three months of suspension due to Covid-19 surge in the country, the Kenya Handball FederationNational League resumed at the weekend with General Service Unit (GSU) and Strathmore University Handball clubs winning big.
GSU, who are featuring in the league for the first time, thrashed Generation Handball Club 41-14 in their first match on Saturday before wrapping up their weekend with another convincing victory against Buccaneers Handball Club 27-21 on Sunday, leaving team manager Janane Jarenga ecstatic.
“We have begun our league campaign on high and we’re hoping to maintain the same momentum as the matches continue,” Jarenga told People Sport.
GSU have now won three matches out of three after beating Kenyatta University 28-26 in the season opener on March 20, before the league was suspended while Strathmore, who were leading the league before its suspension, continued from where they left by beating Kenyatta University 23-19 and Generation 39-14 respectively.
The 2015 champions, Ulinzi Handball Club, who started this season’s campaign by overpowering Generation 44-26 and Thika Handball Club 45-33 in the season opener, had also a good show over the weekend after beating Tigers Handball Club 39-30 and Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology 36-18.
The 2017 champions Black Mambas recorded mixed results after losing 30-25 to Buccaneers Handball Club but fought hard in their second match to edge out Kahawa Handball Club 35-31.
The 2016 league champions TUK Handball Club and 2018, 2019 defending champions Cereals Handball Club were not in action over the weekend.
Meanwhile, after losing to Strathmore 23-19,KU bounced back to edge out Tigers Handball Club 40-38, while Thika handed Kahawa the second defeat of the weekend by beating them 35-32.
