Frustrated Shabana coach Sammy Okoth hints at quitting

Shabana FC coach Sammy Okoth has hinted at quitting his role at the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League returnees following a series of poor results in the top-flight.

The Kisii-based Glamour Boys have struggled to find their footing in the league since they returned after 17 years in the cold, only managing two draws and suffering two defeats from their four matches so far in this campaign.

The situation at Tore Bobe got even worse on Saturday after irate fans demanded answers from the team following their 1-0 defeat against Kariobangi Sharks at Homabay Stadium. What irritated the fans is the fact since promotion; Shabana have been conceding goals in the closing stages.

Against Murang’a Seal in the opener, they conceded in the 90th minute to lose 1-0, against Talanta after taking the lead, they also conceded in the 94th minute for a 1-1 draw, it was the same case against Police, taking the lead before conceding in the 92nd minute for a 1-1 draw.

The outcome has left Okoth also considering a move away from the club insisting he was feeling uncomfortable with the situation of conceding late goals at the club.

“As a coach, I feel very uncomfortable the way we are conceding goals (in the last minutes of the game), I have done everything the team needs as a coach, but I don’t know why we are conceding goals that way,” said Okoth, adding: “Maybe someone else should come and try it because I have tried to ensure every moment is paid keen attention to and that everything is okay, only to concede at the last minute again.”

On what measures he had put in place to stop the rot, Okoth said: “It is something that I am not impressed with but we are working around the clock to address the weakness.”

Okoth is, however, optimistic his players will not let him down in the next assignment when they come up against AFC Leopards at Ulinzi Complex on Sunday.

“The team is in good spirits and I believe my players will not let me down in the next assignment,” said Okoth, adding: “It is a collective responsibility from the technical bench to the players, and we must stand up and make our fans happy, we don’t have any option starting with the AFC game.”

Shabana, who won the National Super League (NSL) title last season, are currently lying 17th on the 18-team table with two points.
