The Football Kenya Federation has hailed Harambee Stars players for putting up a strong team despite being edged out of the competition by Group B runners-up Madagascar at the Kasarani Stadium.

In a statement on Friday, August 22, 2025, FKF President Hussein Mohammed also remarked that the support from fans was incredible.

“Thank you, Harambee Stars! Though the journey ends here, reaching the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals has shown what we can achieve when we believe and work together,” Mohammed said.

Incredible fans

He equally thanked the government for its efforts in motivating the players to outdo themselves.

“To the players, thank you for your effort; to the fans, your support has been incredible; and to the government led by President William Ruto, the Ministry of Sports, FKF NEC, our chairmen, secretariat, coaches, and technical bench – your contribution has been invaluable,” Mohammed said.

He remarked that the performance of the national team was just the beginning of the efforts to develop sports and build its capacity in the nation, noting that the future remains hopeful.

“This is only the beginning. We will continue building, strengthening grassroots football, and working tirelessly to ensure Harambee Stars rise even higher. The future of Kenyan football is bright.”

Eliminated from CHAN

Harambee Stars were eliminated from the CHAN competition after drawing 1-1 in regular time and going on a goalless draw at the end of extra time.

The Kenyan side was defeated on penalties 3-4, to ensure Madagascar books a seat at the semi-final matches.

All eyes are now on Tanzania as it plays against Morocco to fight for a spot at the CHAN 2024 semi-finals.

Kenya suffered its first loss of the campaign despite starting with a strong squad and opening the scoreboard with the first goal.

The visitors pulled one back after the break through a penalty kick to stay level with Harambee Stars, setting the stage for a hard-fought game in which they became victorious.

Kenya’s second goal by Ryan Ogam was disqualified in the second half of the game played in front of Kenyan fans at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
