Dose of revenge as Strathmore Leos stun KCB to win Prinsloo 7s

Strathmore Leos delivered a masterclass performance on Sunday evening, August 3, 2025, to retain the Prinsloo 7s title after a commanding 24-7 victory over KCB Rugby in a rain-interrupted final at Nakuru Athletic Club.

It was a sweet dose of revenge for the students, who had narrowly lost 15-14 to the bankers in last weekend’s Driftwood 7s final. This time, they left no room for doubt—blazing through the match with precision, flair, and power to clinch their third Prinsloo 7s crown after previous wins in 2009 and 2023.

Lightning start in Nakuru

The Leos set the tone early, shaking off early pressure as Victor Mola turned defence into attack—darting the full length of the pitch to register the first try. Moments later, Stanislaus Shikoli doubled the lead, pouncing on a loose lineout to make it 10-0.

KCB briefly threatened a comeback when Bob Muhati crossed the whitewash after a clever assist from Vincent Onyala. The successful conversion narrowed the gap to 10-7, but it would be the bankers’ last meaningful breakthrough.

Leos roar louder

Victor Mola struck again, slicing through KCB’s defensive line for his second try, restoring a 10-point lead. With momentum firmly on their side, Brian Mwendwa took a quick tap and released Barnabas Owuor, who barged over to give Strathmore a 24-7 cushion heading into the break.

KCB looked to respond in the second half, but their effort came undone when Samuel Asati fumbled just short of the try line. Moments later, the skies opened up, and a heavy downpour forced officials to halt play with just three minutes remaining.

Victory sealed in style

With the scoreline unchanged and conditions worsening, the match was called off—and Strathmore Leos were declared champions in front of a drenched but jubilant Nakuru crowd. KCB, who were chasing their fifth Prinsloo title, were left ruing missed chances as the Leos celebrated a statement win.

Elsewhere, Catholic Monks edged Menengai Oilers 17-10 to claim third place, while Nakuru RFC overcame Kenya Harlequin 24-19 in a dramatic fifth-place playoff that went to extra time. The Challenge Trophy went to Daystar Falcons, who crushed Zetech Oaks 39-0.
