Strathmore Leos dug deep to beat KCB 15-10 to win the 55th edition of the Christie Sevens rugby tournament held at the RFUEA grounds over the weekend.

The winning coach Louis Kisia was grateful for his boys’ hunger for points and a crucial 15-5 halftime lead that turned around their fortunes at the end of the game to earn them vengeance over KCB in a cup final that ended KCB’s unbeaten run.

“This time we were hungry for first blood and we made sure we took the lead at halftime which was very crucial because we were playing an experienced side who also happen to be the series defending champions. We fell short in Kabeberi and we needed to return to prove everyone wrong and now we are going back to work. We want to win the overall title and the Sh500,000 prize.” Strathmore Leos head coach Louis Kisia said.

In Kabeberi Sevens at the same venue the last weekend it was KCB who grabbed an early 12-0 lead at halftime and in the second half, it was Strathmore’s show despite losing the match in the end due to two missed conversions and a sin bin that was costly.

KCB assistant coach Andrew Amonde is told the People Sport they knew playing Strathmore for the second cup final in a row was going to be tough.

Wake up call

Amonde said the loss served as a wake-up call to their players who failed to take their chances well in a match their most valuable player and last weekend’ top try-scorer Jacob Oje was completely manned and not taken for granted by the students.

“It was a tough match and we were fighting to get in control of the game. Unfortunately, we did not take our chances well while Strathmore were clinical in the first half and were leading by three tries, we knew playing against Strathmore twice in a final was going to be a challenge,” Amonde said.

Barnabas Owuor, Mathew Mogaya and Philemon Olang gave Leos the first half 15-5 lead courtesy of a try each while in retaliation Geoffrey Okwatch and Levy Amunga scored the two unconverted tries for the Banker.

The most valuable player was Philemon Olang ‘Chinese’ of Strathmore while the most promising player-cum the top try scorer was Daystars Patrick Odongo. Amon Wamalwa of Homeboyz bagged the top points scorer award.
