KCB extend lead in Kenya Cup rugby tournament
Former Kenya Cup champions KCB dismissed Homeboyz with a 29-10 bonus win to remain firmly in first place with 15 points.
Fellow unbeaten teams led by the defending champions and runners-up Kabras and Menengai Oilers remained in second and third place respectively.
The Bankers scored five tries and two conversions to secure a crucial bonus point win which ensured they remained first courtesy of superior points difference compared to Kabras as the two are tied on 15 points.
KCB had not conceded any points in the opening two rounds until the third round when the Deejayz brought a strong opposition in the first half where they led at some point before KCB fought hard to lead 14-10 at halftime to eventually win 29-10.
Darwin Mukidza, Curtis Lilako, Martin Owilah, Andrew Amonde and Brian Wahinya scored five tries for the hosts.
The third round gave the defending champions Kabras 80 minutes of competitive rugby also highlighted by the tough opening half in Kakamega despite the hosts emerging as 27-12 winners of the duel against Kenya Harlequins.
The two sides had met during a pre-season friendly in Nairobi and the Harlequins won the match to predict a tough showdown in the forest where the Sugar Millers had to rally from 7-0 down in a clash.
The difference was made through a penalty by Kabras to lead the match 13-12 at halftime.
Lucky Dewald scored a converted try to give Quins a 7-0 lead that fought back successfully through Ntabeni Dukisa’s penalty and two tries by Bryceson Adaka and Ephraim Od’uor.
Second try
Quins failed to convert their second try which could have given them the lead at halftime.
Just like KCB who were in Nairobi, the Sugar Millers would later seal the bonus point fate in the second half when Brian Tanga and Bryceson Adaka scored crucial tries all converted by Ntabeni Dukisa.
Menengai Oilers also remained unbeaten despite missing the bonus point that dropped them to third place after Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) dared them by leading the match 10-6 at halftime and the Oilers had to fight hard in the returning half to walk away with a 26-10 win.
Blak Blad lost 19-10 to Mwamba but despite the loss, the students remained fourth on the log with nine points which is a tie with fifth-placed Mwamba and sixth-placed Homeboyz.
Nakuru rediscovered the winning lane through a 26-12 win over Strathmore University to ascend to 7th place while Strathmore dropped to eighth.
Catholic Monks, Mean Machine, Harlequins and MMUST then complete the bottom four standings respectively.
