Debutants Nairobi United shock Shabana FC at Gusii Stadium
Shabana FC suffered a 3-1 defeat to Nairobi United in their first league match of the year at Gusii Stadium on Sunday, January 4, 2026. The home side, eager to maintain their top-four position, struggled to contain the visitors, who controlled the game from the start.
The match began evenly, with both sides probing for openings. However, Nairobi United took the lead in the 18th minute through a well-taken goal that gave Shabana FC an early setback. The visitors doubled their advantage in the 44th minute, heading into half-time 2-0 up. Shabana FC showed flashes of attacking intent but could not find a breakthrough before the break.
In the second half, Nairobi United continued to dominate. They extended their lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute, putting Shabana FC under further pressure. Despite the deficit, the home team fought back. Brian Michira, returning from a long injury layoff, converted a penalty in the 90th minute, securing a consolation goal for Shabana FC and bringing the score to 3-1.
The loss marks a disappointing start to 2026 for Shabana FC, who were aiming to use the first fixture of the year to strengthen their league position. Currently with 23 points, the Glamour Boys needed a win to keep pace with the top three – AFC Leopards, Tusker, and Gor Mahia.
Shabana FC entered the game facing changes on the bench. The recent departure of assistant coach Bernard Mwalala to Bandari FC forced head coach Peter Okidi to appoint former player Andrew Ongwae as the new assistant.

Ongwae, an experienced coach, was officially unveiled at Gusii Stadium before kick-off. Despite this, the team struggled to adapt tactically against the disciplined Nairobi United side.
Michira returns, Shabana struggles
The home team received a boost with the return of Michira, who had been sidelined with a groin injury since October. His presence provided a spark in attack, but Shabana FC lacked consistency and cohesion in defence. Nairobi United, making their top-flight debut this season, capitalised on mistakes and maintained composure throughout the match.
Looking ahead, Shabana FC will host Gor Mahia at Gusii Stadium in a crucial encounter. The team will need to regroup quickly and address defensive lapses to bounce back and remain in contention for the league title.

For Nairobi United, the victory provides a major confidence boost as they continue their debut campaign. Sitting 9th in the league but with several games in hand, the win signals their ability to compete against established sides and secure valuable points in the early stages of the season.
Shabana FC will hope the mid-season transfer window, which opens on January 5, can help strengthen the squad. Nine players, including captain Daniel Bichiok, have already been released, and the club is expected to make further adjustments to improve performance.
