Chicago Marathon: Ambassador John Kerich challenges Kenyan athletes to carry country’s flag with pride
Kenya’s ambassador to the USA, John Kerich, hosted a delegation of Kenyan athletes ahead of the 2025 edition of the Chicago Marathon scheduled for Sunday, October 12, 2025.
In a statement on X on Sunday, Kerich challenged the Team Kenya participants to run with purpose and showcase the country’s might as a sporting nation.
The Ambassador conveyed his sincere best wishes for a successful race tomorrow, Sunday, October 12, 2025, and reaffirmed his confidence in their capacity to exemplify Kenya’s enduring strength, determination, and prominence on the global stage.

He encouraged the athletes to run with purpose and pride, carrying Kenya’s flag high and inspiring future generations through their excellence and dedication.
Kenya’s star list includes John Korir, who eyes a triumphant return to the Chicago course to defend his title.
Kiptum’s record
The athlete starred in the competition’s 2024 race, winning in his first World Marathon Major, with a personal best time of 2:02:43. The victory added to his back-to-back success in the Los Angeles marathon in 2022 and 2023.
Korir has expressed optimism about bettering his time in the lead-up to the race.
More notably, Korir, who has a personal best record of 2:02:44, will be hoping to draw from his repertoire as he challenges the world record of 2:00:35, set by the late Kelvin Kiptum in the same race a year earlier.
Geoffrey Kamworor, Timothy Kiplagat, Amos Kipruto, Philemon Kiplimo Daniel Ebenyo and Cyprian Kotut are among other Kenyans who will light up the downtown streets of Chicago for the race.
Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo will present a tough challenge to the Kenyan contingent.
Meanwhile, Loice Chemnung, Irene Chepatai, and Mary Ngugi-Cooper will run in the women’s category.
The ladies will be up against Megertu Alemu, the Valencia Marathon winner, and Hawi Feysa.
