As the clock ticks down to Kenya’s opener in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the national mood is charged with anticipation.

On Saturday, August 2, President William Ruto paid a morale-boosting visit to the Harambee Stars’ camp, pledging a massive financial incentive to spur the team on as they prepare to face continental giants.

“If the team reaches the quarterfinals, they will earn Ksh60 million collectively, Ksh70 million for reaching the semifinals, and a staggering Ksh 600 million should they lift the trophy,” read the FKF statement.

The president, accompanied by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, and Local Organising Committee Chairman Nicholas Musonye, met the players ahead of their Group A clash against DR Congo.

According to the statement from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the visit underscored the government’s growing investment in football and the broader sports agenda.

Incentives tied to performance

During the visit, President Ruto announced a reward scheme that ties player earnings to the team’s progress. Each member of the Harambee Stars delegation will receive Ksh1 million for every win at CHAN 2024 and Ksh 500,000 for every draw.

If the team reaches the quarterfinals, they will earn Ksh60 million collectively, Ksh70 million for reaching the semifinals, and a staggering Ksh 600 million should they lift the trophy.

“During the visit, the President pledged a reward of Ksh 1 million to each member of the Harambee Stars delegation for every match won at #CHAN2024 and Ksh500,000 for every draw. Should the team reach the quarterfinals, they will receive Ksh60 million; Ksh70 million for reaching the semifinals; and Ksh 600 million should they win the tournament,” read part of the statement.

The president urged Kenyans to rally behind the national team, framing the tournament as a unifying force that transcends political and cultural lines. His message echoed sentiments shared during his earlier address at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on July 16, where he told the players they carry the hopes of over 55 million Kenyans.

“We believe in your capacity and your professionalism, and we will cheer you and support you,” he told the squad.

Stars backed

FKF CEO Harold Ndege reaffirmed the federation’s faith in the team, led by head coach Benni McCarthy. “These are our players who will carry the flag high. They are ready to represent the country and show other youth that success comes through meaningful contributions to the nation,” Ndege said.

The team heads into the tournament with a revamped 25-man squad, featuring last-minute additions including Brian Michira, signalling Kenya’s intent to make a strong showing in their CHAN debut.

Fans fired up

Sports CS Salim Mvurya also urged fans to show up in large numbers and demonstrate Kenya’s passion for football. With tickets for the opening match already sold out and tight security arrangements in place—including online ticketing and enhanced surveillance—expectations are high for a memorable home debut.

President Ruto’s Ksh 600 million jackpot may just be the extra motivation the Harambee Stars need to go all the way.
