The chairman of Nakuru Sombea Boxing Club Martin Luther has described Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) elections held at the weekend as a sham exercise and is heading to court this morning to demand a proper exercise and sue the Registrar of Sports Rose Wasike for aiding the illegal exercise.

On Saturday, Anthony Jamal Ombok was re-elected unopposed for another term during the federation’s polls held at Kasarani Stadium.

The elections also saw the appointment of new and returning officials to key positions within the federation. Lydia Kinyua, previously the assistant treasurer, was elected as First Vice President, while Chrispine Onyango takes over as Second Vice President.

David Munuhe Karitu retained his position as Secretary General, with Joseph Ochieng Otieno, a former BFK member, stepping in as his assistant. Benjamin Moses Oyombi continues as treasurer, assisted by newcomer Gladys Musavi. John Waweru Wangai remains the Competition Secretary, with Joselyn Mare as his assistant.

Notably, legendary boxer Ibrahim Wachira Bilali, a bronze medallist at the 1984 Olympic Games, and Dominic Opiyo have joined the executive committee as members.

Luther who was also vying for the Nakuru County chairman’s position said going by the Sports Act that bars any sports official to go for more than two terms, Ombok should not have sought re-election.

He also claims that there were ficticious voters fraudulently registered and some locked out by the Sports Registrar for the purpose of the polls.

“Nyeri and Kiambu Counties were locked out of the exercise by design, as well as well known clubs like Ndoto of Kisumu and Mombasa’s Havana Boxing Club. Then counties that have never had any boxing activities like Mandera, Nandi, Kisii, Migori, Vihiga, Kwale and Garisa were included to vote,” Luther told PD Sport.

He added: “ The ongoing narrative surrounding the so-called achievements of the current Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) leadership is nothing more than a smokescreen intended to divert attention from the blatant electoral irregularities and governance failures that continue to afflict Kenyan boxing. While they highlight international medals and live-streaming initiatives, the fundamental structure of their administration remains deeply flawed, characterized by exclusion, manipulation, and blatant disregard for legal processes. It comes as no surprise that Nakuru and Prisons have been sidelined from the electoral process—one denied participation through bureaucratic interference, and the other excluded following a flawed county election marred by irregularities. The so-called “unsubstantiated complaints” raised by stakeholders are, in fact, legitimate grievances, grounded in violations of the Sports Act and the binding directives of the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT). If BFK truly valued integrity, these concerns would have been addressed transparently rather than dismissed as mere noise.”

Luther said that no amount of medals would sanitize an illegitimate electoral process and that the real fight was not over and it was just beginning.

“The rule of law, not manipulation, will have the final say. Defiance of SDTSC Case No. E023 of 2024 amounts to contempt of legally binding directives issued by the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT). This undermines the integrity of

Kenya’s sports governance framework and sets a dangerous precedent for impunity,” he said.

He added: “ Part VI, Section 20(1) of the Sports Registrar Regulations, 2016 mandates that elections in a sports organization must be conducted in strict adherence to its constitution. In this case, the Nakuru County Boxing Association Constitution should have guided the electoral process.
