Newly crowned World Athletics 10,000 metres gold medalist Beatrice Chebet has expressed her elation after bagging a gold medal in the ongoing championship in Tokyo.

Speaking on Saturday, September 13, 2025, moments after the triumph, Chebet stated that the motivation to seal an additional gold medal to add to her previous titles propelled her quest at the World Championship stage.

“I am so happy. Coming to Tokyo, I told myself, I don’t have a World Championship gold, so I must get one. I am a World Cross Country champion, I am an Olympic champion, and now I am a World Champion,” she remarked.

“I am so proud of myself. I also thank everyone who has supported me on this journey,” she opined.

In her latest triumph, the Olympic champion stormed home in 30:37.61 to clinch Kenya’s first gold medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

Record-breaking feat

The 25-year-old stayed close to the leaders as the race unfolded. With one lap to go, she tracked Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay and Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, who had forced the pace. Chebet bided her time and then kicked hard on the final bend. Her surge down the home straight was decisive, opening a gap her rivals could not close.

Battocletti took silver in 30:38.23, setting an Italian record and securing her country’s first medal in this event at a World Championships.

Tsegay, on her part, was forced to contend with bronze in 30:39.65. Agnes Jebet Ngetich of Kenya finished just outside the medals in fourth, clocking 30:42.66.

In addition to achieving the rare personal feat of an Olympic title, the world record, and now the world crown, Chebet’s win also snapped Kenya’s ten-year wait for gold in the women’s 10,000m at the World Championships.

More golds?

Meanwhile, the prospect for more gold medals appears promising for Kenyan athletes.

Faith Kipyegon, Nelly Chepchirchir, Susan Ejore, and debutant Dorcus Ewoi all booked their places in the semi-finals in the  women’s 1500m team.

Kipyegon, the world and Olympic champion, controlled her race to win in 4:02.55. Chepchirchir and Ejore also topped their heats, while Ewoi impressed with a strong fourth-place finish in her debut.
