Gor Mahia co-captain Austin Odhiambo has confirmed his departure from the club after three years, bringing an end to a successful chapter with the Kenyan champions as he prepares for a new challenge abroad.

In a message posted on his Facebook account on Thursday, January 1, 2026, Odhiambo described Gor Mahia as a home and admitted that the decision to leave was not easy. He thanked the club’s fans, teammates, and everyone who supported him during his time at the club.

“Today I bid farewell to this club that has been a home to me for the past three years,” Odhiambo wrote. “This was not an easy decision, but I’m moving on to a new challenge in my career.”

The midfielder expressed gratitude to Gor Mahia supporters, saying they stood by him even during difficult moments. He also thanked his teammates for helping him grow both as a player and as a person. Odhiambo said he will always cherish his time at the club.

Odhiambo’s farewell came shortly after confirmation that he had completed a move to Lebanese giants Nejmeh SC. The transfer follows weeks of negotiations, with Gor Mahia opting to cash in on the player, who had entered the final six months of his contract.

New chapter abroad

Nejmeh announced the signing on their official social media platforms, welcoming the Kenyan midfielder to Beirut. The club is one of the most successful teams in Lebanon and currently sits second in the league standings, just behind rivals Al Ansar.

Odhiambo leaves Gor Mahia as one of the most influential players in the Kenyan Premier League in recent seasons. His performances played a key role in the club’s league success and helped him build a strong reputation both locally and internationally.

The highlight of his club career came during the 2023/24 season, when he won the KPL Most Valuable Player award after recording 12 goals and 13 assists. Although Gor Mahia endured a difficult 2024/25 campaign and missed out on silverware, Odhiambo remained a central figure in the team’s attack and leadership group.

From Gor Mahia’s perspective, his mid-season exit represents a major loss. Odhiambo provided creativity, goals, and leadership, especially during high-pressure matches. However, the transfer also gives the club a chance to raise funds and strengthen other areas of the squad during the current transfer window.

At Nejmeh, Odhiambo will reunite with fellow Kenyan internationals Masud Juma and Teddy Akumu. The club is pushing for the league title and qualification for continental competition, offering the midfielder a competitive environment and increased exposure.

Odhiambo’s move marks another step in a journey that began in Nairobi’s Baba Dogo area, passed through AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, and now continues in the Middle East. On the international stage, he has already made history by scoring Kenya’s first-ever goal at the CHAN 2024 tournament.
