By Collins Amanga, June 16, 2024
Athletics Kenya has announced its team for the Paris 2024 Olympics, featuring a strong lineup of seasoned champions and promising newcomers across various disciplines.
This team is set to uphold the nation’s legacy of excellence in athletics, particularly in middle and long-distance running.
Olympics Champions
Faith Kipyegon, a double Olympic champion, has once again established herself as a leading figure in Kenyan athletic.
At the Kenyan Athletics Olympic Trials, she secured an Olympic quota in the 5000m and delivered a dominant performance in the 1500m, clocking 3:53.99 at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.
This marked the fastest time ever in the women’s 1500m on Kenyan soil.
Kipyegon’s exceptional display, despite not competing since last September’s Prefontaine Classic, reaffirms her status as a standard-setter.
The four-time world champion won the 5000m on Friday, outpacing the 10,000m world record holder Beatrice Chebet, who also aims to compete in both events in Paris.
Ferdinand Omanyala showcased his speed, emerging as the fastest sprinter in the 100m and establishing himself as a top contender for Paris.
Emmanuel Wanyonyi overcame a challenging semi-final in the 800m, securing a world-leading personal best of 1:41.70 in the final, proving his resilience and skill.
Kenya’s dominance in steeplechase continues with a strong lineup in both men’s and women’s categories.
Faith Cherotich, Beatrice Chepkoech, and Jackline Chepkoech will compete in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, while Amos Serem, Simon Koech, and Abraham Kibiwott will represent the men’s team.
In the 10,000m events, Lilian Kasait and Margaret Chelimo will lead the women’s team, with Daniel Mateiko, Nicholas Kipkorir, and Bernard Kibet representing the men.
Kenya’s marathon team boasts some of the world’s best, including Eliud Kipchoge, the world record holder and two-time Olympic champion.
He will be joined by Benson Kipruto and Alexander Mutiso. In the women’s marathon, Peris Jepchirchir, Hellen Obiri, and Brigid Kosgei will aim to continue Kenya’s dominance in this grueling event.
