Anyembe, Shichenje, Muguna to join Stars in Mauritius
Foreign based players Daniel Anyembe (Denmark), Collins Sichenje (Finland) and Kenneth Muguna (Tanzania) will link up with the team in Mauritius for the Four-Nations tournament starting on Sunday.
The trio could not make it in time to leave with the rest of the team who depart tomorrow morning and according to the coach, they will fly directly to the Indian Ocean nation.
The team also received a boost yesterday with the arrival of Anthony ‘Teddy’ Akumu, Richard Odada, Maurice ‘Marcelo’ Ouma and Amos Nondi.
Meanwhile, head coach Engin Firat is sweating on the fitness of KAA Gent centre-back Joseph Stanley Okumu, Brian ‘Niang’ Mandela of South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and forward Masud Juma who plays for Al-Faisaly Football Club in Saudi Arabia as they are likely to miss the trip to Mauritius tomorrow due injuries.
Okumu who missed four last league matches in Belgium reported to camp on Wednesday evening and had a light training yesterday at Nyayo Stadium under keen supervision of team doctors.
Mandela also did report to camp on Wednesday as well but missed Thursday’s session, a confirmation that he could be out completely unlike Okumu who will need to pass a last minute fitness test for his engagement in the next week’s tourney.
Firat said he is eager to give new players a deserving chance to see what they can do before AFCON and World Cup Qualifiers later this year.
“There will be a lot of players missing because of injuries or because they are still playing for thier clubs until June 11 and 12 and so it doesn’t make sense to invite them a maximum of one match. This means new players can get a chance to play and they should be ready,” Firat explained.
On the issue of injured players, Firat said, “For example now Brian Mandela is here injured, Joseph Okumu is here,he made some sacrifices but I don’t know if he can play.Masud was here as well receiving treatment but it does not look good.
There will be a lot of changes for sure especially in the defence and offensive.”
Skipper Michael Olunga is one of the foreign based players who have reported to camp in Nairobi.
All the foreign based players were given upto today to have reported to the team’s training base.
Harambee Stars will depart tomorrow for Mauritius and will begin their campaign against regional neighbours Djibouti on Sunday.
