AFC Leopards stumble against Kakamega Homeboyz at Nyayo Stadium
AFC Leopards suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz in a tightly contested SportPesa League clash at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, January 4, 2026. The loss halted the leaders’ run of strong results and gave Homeboyz a crucial win in their bid to climb the table.
The match got off to a fast start, with Kakamega Homeboyz taking the lead early. AFC Leopards struggled to regain control and create clear-cut chances in the opening half.
Humphrey Katasi, the Ingwe goalkeeper, made a series of important saves to keep his side in the game, including denying efforts from Kakamega’s forwards in the first 30 minutes. Despite Leopards’ dominance in possession and attempts on goal, Homeboyz remained disciplined, making it difficult for the hosts to break through.
Leopards head coach Fred Ambani made several substitutions in the second half, bringing on Kelly Madada, Kennedy Owino, and Ssenyonjo in a bid to boost the attacking threat. Emmanuel Lwangu and Beja Hassan were also introduced as the team sought an equaliser.
Madada came close to scoring on two occasions, with a long-range effort and a header saved by the visiting goalkeeper. Kelly Madada’s effort in the 72nd minute hit the goal line, but Leopards were unable to convert.
Despite pressing for the equaliser, AFC Leopards could not find a breakthrough. Kakamega Homeboyz defended well and maintained their composure, holding onto the slender advantage until the final whistle. A late yellow card was shown to Kennedy Owino of Leopards in stoppage time, but it had little effect on the outcome.

Leopards’ lead under pressure
The defeat leaves AFC Leopards second on the league table, level on points with leaders Kakamega Homeboyz. The team has been strong at home, remaining unbeaten in their last 10 league matches at Nyayo Stadium, but the loss against Homeboyz highlighted difficulties in breaking down organised defences.
AFC Leopards’ squad has been affected by injuries. Promising striker Elias Mugane is out for the season after a serious knee injury, while left-back Vincent Mahiga remains sidelined. On a positive note, midfielder Fredrick Alushula has returned to training following knee surgery, providing the team with more options going forward.
Looking ahead, AFC Leopards will aim to bounce back quickly as the league season continues. Coach Fred Ambani will hope his team can restore their attacking rhythm and tighten the defence in upcoming matches. For Kakamega Homeboyz, the win provides momentum and belief as they continue their campaign.
Meanwhile, debutants Nairobi United pulled off a major shock by defeating Shabana FC 3-1 at Gusii Stadium in their first league match of 2026. Shabana, eager to maintain their top-four position, struggled to contain the visitors, who dominated from the start.
