Gor Mahia’s hopes of defending their Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League crown suffered a major setback after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against fierce rivals AFC Leopards in the latest Mashemeji Derby.

The stalemate, played at the revamped Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay on Monday, June 2, 2025, handed Kenya Police FC an advantage as they moved closer to clinching the league title.

Both teams started cautiously, aware of the stakes and the intense rivalry. Early exchanges were tight, with neither side willing to take unnecessary risks.

Odhiambo fires Gor

The deadlock was broken in the 25th minute when Gor Mahia’s Austin Odhiambo, recently called up to the Harambee Stars squad, struck a powerful shot past AFC Leopards goalkeeper Levis Opiyo.

Odhiambo’s goal ignited celebrations among the K’Ogalo faithful and gave the home team a confidence boost. Gor Mahia controlled possession for much of the first half but failed to extend their lead.

Leopards fight back

After the break, AFC Leopards came out stronger and more determined. Their persistence paid off at the 50th minute when Brian Wanyama capitalised on a defensive lapse to score the equaliser.

The goal shifted momentum in favour of the visitors and put pressure on Gor Mahia to respond.

Gor Mahia’s coach made several substitutions to regain control of the game, but AFC Leopards held firm. The match ended in a stalemate, much to the frustration of the home crowd.

Police close in on title

The draw is a significant boost for league leaders Kenya Police FC, who now hold a six-point lead at the top with just a few games remaining.

Kenya Police will be favourites to clinch the title, while Gor Mahia must win their remaining matches against Ulinzi Stars and Kenya Police to keep their hopes alive.

AFC Leopards, despite the hard-fought draw, remain in sixth place with 47 points. Their performance in the Mashemeji Derby this season has yielded just two points, a disappointing return for the storied club.
