Willis Otieno: Ol Kalou by-election is a warning shot ahead of 2027 showdown
Constitutional lawyer Willis Otieno has described the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election as a significant political signal ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying the outcome reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the government.
In a statement on Friday, July 17, 2026, following the by-election, Otieno likened the contest to the first crack in a collapsing dam, arguing that while a by-election may appear minor, it can reveal deeper political undercurrents.

“A by-election is to a general election what the first crack is to a collapsing dam. On its own, it may seem small. But it signals that the pressure beneath the surface has become impossible to contain,” he said.
What Ol Kalou’s polls mean for Kenya
Otieno said the Ol Kalou vote was about much more than filling a vacant parliamentary seat, describing it as a reminder that governments are accountable to citizens.
He argued that the country owes justice to families who have lost loved ones under circumstances they believe could have been prevented, saying their grief demands accountability rather than indifference.

The Safina deputy party leader also raised concerns over the high tax burden on workers, claiming many Kenyans struggle to make ends meet while allegations of wasteful public spending continue to dominate public debate.
He further pointed to rising unemployment among young people, saying many graduates are leaving school only to face limited job opportunities and growing hopelessness.
Otieno also criticised the state of public healthcare, saying patients continue to endure long queues and shortages of medicine and medical equipment despite the challenges facing ordinary citizens.
The 2027 general elections
Looking ahead to the 2027 General Election, he said the polls would be more than a contest for political office, describing them as a defining moment for the country’s future.

“The 2027 General Election will not simply be about electing leaders. It will be a referendum on the kind of Kenya we want to leave behind,” he said.
