Kenya’s football giants, Gor Mahia FC, have concluded the 2025 calendar, which offered both promise and disappointment. The club released its official review on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, highlighting a solid record across all competitions.

In total, Gor Mahia played 37 matches, winning 19, drawing 11, and losing seven. The team scored 52 goals while conceding 25 and kept 20 clean sheets, reflecting a strong defensive performance.

However, the season ended without any silverware, marking a rare trophyless year for the 21-time Kenyan champions.

Gor Mahia’s failure to retain the FKF Premier League title was one of the major setbacks. Kenya Police FC clinched their first-ever league crown after a 1-0 win over Shabana FC in June, finishing with an unassailable 64 points. Gor Mahia and Tusker, both on 55 points before the final games, were unable to close the gap, leaving Gor Mahia short of a third consecutive league title.

The disappointment continued in the FKF Cup, where Nairobi United shocked the league giants with a 2-1 victory in the final. Gor Mahia had been favourites heading into the match, but goals from Frank Ouya and Enock Machaka secured Nairobi United’s first major domestic trophy.

Ben Stanley Omondi scored Gor Mahia’s only goal, but it was not enough to prevent another missed opportunity.

Gor Mahia revamps technical team

The outcomes prompted significant changes within the club’s technical staff. In early July, Gor Mahia announced the sacking of their entire technical bench, including interim coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, in a move described as a “mutual separation.”

Club Chairman Ambrose Rachier stated that the decision followed a comprehensive internal review aimed at strengthening the club’s technical and operational capacity. The separation was amicable, with the club expressing gratitude for the contributions of the outgoing staff.

Gor Mahia moved quickly to rebuild the coaching team. In August, the club appointed Charles Akonnor from Ghana as the new Head Coach, bringing experience from managing the Ghana national team. He was joined by Kobi-Mensah Bismark as Assistant Head Coach and Ben Owu as Goalkeepers’ Coach.

Brian Odongo also joined as the new team doctor. These appointments signalled the start of a rebuilding phase as the club aims to bounce back in the 2025/26 season.

As the 2025/26 Kenyan Premier League season progresses, Gor Mahia sits third in the table after 12 matches, with seven wins, two draws, and three losses. They have scored 15 goals and conceded eight, giving them 23 points.

AFC Leopards lead the table with 24 points, while Tusker also sits on 24 points but has played three more games. The league remains competitive, and Gor Mahia will be eager to close the gap and challenge for the title.
