Woman in Maigo murder case now free for lack of evidence

A woman arrested in connection with the murder of Nairobi Hospital acting finance director Erick Maigo at his Woodley home in Kilimani area has been freed by a Nairobi court after detectives found no evidence linking her to the offence.

Cynthia Lusenga Andayo alias Flora Akoth Okonda, who was cuddling a baby while in the dock, walked free after police disclosed to Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi that “we found no evidence to link the suspect to the heinous and brutal killing of Maigo.”

Following the revelation, the magistrate said there is no tangible reason to continue detaining Lusenga and, therefore, discharged her unconditionally.

The lead investigator Patrick Boge sought to have Lusenga released from custody saying they have not found any evidence that she had a hand in the killing of Maigo.

“Your honour, the investigations so far conducted into the matter reveal that Lusenga was not involved in the matter. We seek your consent to close the investigation file against her and she be released unconditionally,” Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer Boge told the court.

Investigations on top gear

Lusenga had been in custody for five days from Monday last week after police arrested her from Kibera suspecting she had been involved in the killing of Maigo whose body had 25 stab wounds.

The application by the state to free Lusenga comes after police claimed they are in the process of arresting the main suspect whose images were circulated last week following the release of CCTV footage showing the suspect, who is on the run, jumping a barbed perimeter wall.

Crime busters and forensic analysis examined finger prints of Lusenga and other exhibits recovered from the scene of crime and could not rhyme, Boge said.  The suspect was thereby given a clean bill of health.

Last week, the media was awash with photos of an underage suspect scaling down the perimeter wall after allegedly exiting the house of the deceased through the rear wall.

Upon landing, the suspect was seen stealthy walking away covering her face with  a hood and a maroon black checked top and black trouser.

The unperturbed suspect disappeared in thin air and police are on high alert combing every area within and without Nairobi county to arrest the suspected killer.

Police on Thursday last week stated that they have since recovered the  clothes worn by the suspect at Bombolulu village in Kibra.

Detectives have also recovered at the scene of the crime two knives allegedly used to stab Maigo severally on the left side of the chest.

When Lusenga was brought to court, police stated  they arrested her following a report made by one Amina Kamora at Kibra Police Station that there was a commotion in house number 6 in the said residential court.    Following the report, Boge said that a team of police officers from Kilimani sub county visited the scene of crime and established that the deceased namely Maigo, 37, had been stabbed severally on the left side of the chest by unknown people and secured the scene of crime.

Murder weapons

The officer said investigations so far conducted has since revealed that the deceased was at home around 6pm when he was attacked by unknown people who were armed with kitchen knives.

He added that DCI detectives who visited the crime scene did recover the murder weapons being kitchen knives and Maigo’s body lying in a pool of blood next to his bed. According to a report lodged with police, Maigo’s the neighbours said they heard him groaning in pain and the woman who was in the house refused to open the door, but had escaped when police arrived.
