Wetang’ula raises concern over rising road carnages as festive season takes shape
By Joel Masibo, December 15, 2025National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has raised concerns over the rising number of road accidents as the festive season approaches.
Wetang’ula has spoken after at least 10 people lost their lives following a road accident along the Kisii-Kisumu highway around Chabera Rachuonyo East Sub-County in Homa Bay County.
The accident occurred on the night of Sunday, December 14, 2025 and involved two lorries and a private van travelling from Kakamega towards Nyamira.
Similarly, 28 people were injured in a road accident involving an Easy Coach bus and a trailer along the Nakuru-Kisumu highway at the weekend, 10 hours after the Kisii-Kisumu accident.
Increasing road carnages
Taking to his X account on Monday, December 15, 2025, Wetang’ula said: ”I join fellow Kenyans in expressing deep concern over the rising road carnage claiming innocent lives. Late last night, ten people died along the Kisumu–Chabera Road, just hours after other accidents across the country had claimed nearly twenty lives,” he said.
The National Assembly Speaker went ahead to caution road users to remain vigilant in a bid to save lives as families travel upcountry for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

”My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families. During this busy holiday period, I urge all road users to act responsibly. Drivers must ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and obey traffic rules, while passengers should report reckless conduct to help avert tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” Moses Wetang’ula said.
Jirongo dies
The Speaker’s call to exercise caution on the roads comes shortly after former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo died early Saturday morning, December 13, 2025, after his car collided with a passenger bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, with the police saying the accident occurred at around 3 am.
Following the death of the former Minister, his family has called for a thorough government investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, raising questions about his final movements before the fatal road crash.
While police have described the incident as a road accident, Jirongo’s family says several unanswered questions remain. They insist that only a detailed investigation can explain how he ended up in Naivasha, contrary to his known plans.
