Weatherman lists areas to receive rainfall in 7-day forecast
Kenyans should brace themselves for a week of weather extremes, as the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department indicates hot days, chilly nights, and strong winds across various regions.
The weekly outlook, covering September 9-15, 2025, presents a picture of contrasting conditions that will impact nearly every corner of the country.
According to the statement released by the Kenya Meteorological Department on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, rainfall will continue in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and sections of the Rift Valley, giving some relief to farmers and communities in those regions.
However, many other areas are expected to remain largely sunny, signalling that dry conditions will persist.
Temperatures on the extremes
The Met Department has warned of soaring daytime temperatures above 30°C in much of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya. Towns like Mandera, Lodwar, and Garissa are expected to be the hottest, with Mandera projected at 37.0°C, Lodwar at 36.0°C, and Garissa at 35.0°C.
But even as parts of the country bake under intense heat, the nights in the high-altitude regions will tell a different story. The forecast shows that temperatures will dip below 10°C in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region. Nyahururu could record lows of 7.0°C, while Nyeri may dip to 9.0°C and Narok to around 10.0°C. This swing between hot days and cold nights is expected to define the week ahead.
Strong winds expected
Winds are also set to shape the week’s weather, with the forecast warning of strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s). These will particularly affect the Coast, including Kenya’s territorial waters, as well as the South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya. Such conditions could impact marine activities and light aircraft operations.

Regional outlook
The forecast offers a detailed picture of what Kenyans in different parts of the country should expect:
Highlands West of Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin & Rift Valley: Sunny mornings with occasional rains, afternoon showers and thunderstorms, and possible night rains.
North-western Kenya (Turkana & Samburu): Mostly sunny days and partly cloudy nights, though occasional showers could still occur.
Highlands East of Rift Valley (including Nairobi, Nyeri, Meru, Kiambu, Embu): Cloudy mornings with light rains, giving way to sunny intervals before afternoon and night showers in a few areas.
North-eastern Kenya (Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Marsabit): Predominantly sunny days with partly cloudy nights, though occasional morning rains may appear.
South-eastern Lowlands (Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita Taveta): Cloudy mornings turning into sunny days, and partly cloudy nights.
Coast (Mombasa, Malindi, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu): Sunny intervals during the day with the likelihood of morning and night showers in a few places.
Weather review
Meanwhile, Mandera registered the hottest day at 37.4°C, while Nyahururu recorded the coldest night at 7.2°C. Overall, daytime temperatures have been on the rise across the country, while nighttime temperatures have fluctuated, rising in areas like Narok, Nakuru, and Nyahururu but dropping in places such as Kitui, Makindu, and Meru.
With such varying conditions, the Met Department’s forecast underscores the importance of preparation. Farmers, travellers, and families are advised to stay alert to localised changes and adjust their plans accordingly.
