Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has strongly defended former President Uhuru Kenyatta, describing him as the undisputed political kingpin of the Mount Kenya region.

She criticised recent attacks on the retired president and warned leaders against dividing the mountain with careless remarks.

In a statement on Monday, September 29, 2025, Wamuchomba said it was disheartening to see leaders from the region fighting each other for political advantage. She argued that no one owns the eight million votes from Mount Kenya and reminded politicians that the community had supported different parties in the past.

“Nobody has the monopoly of the eight million mountain votes. Before DCP there was Jubilee, UDA, DP and others. We said before; hatupangwingwi,” she wrote.

Wamuchomba praised Uhuru’s leadership record, pointing out that during his ten years in office, he never faced impeachment and did not move to impeach his deputy despite political disagreements. According to her, this showed his ability to hold the country together.

Elsewhere, Sabina Chege claimed that when Uhuru was in power, he was the kingpin in Mount Kenya.

The MP further stated that Uhuru had the freedom to endorse any leader to succeed him, even if it was not her. She wondered why some leaders wanted to inherit a party they had previously dismissed.

“If all what was said about him during the swearing in of the KK government is true, why do you want to inherit his messy party? Inheritance is not given by force,” she added.

Wamuchomba warned that constant attacks on Uhuru were an insult not only to him but also to Kiambu County and the country at large. She cautioned that those who demeaned him risked alienating voters.

“Let it be clear, you attack Uhuru; you attack Kiambu County and we are watching,” she declared.

Wamuchomba defends Uhuru strongly

On reports linking Uhuru to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Wamuchomba asked when any agreement had been made about succession. She stressed that Kenya is a democratic country and that everyone has the right to associate freely.

Wamuchomba called on Cleophas Malala and his allies to stop their attacks on the former president. She described Uhuru as a statesman admired across the country and urged leaders to focus on working harder to surpass his record rather than belittling him.

Meanwhile, Uhuru has remained silent on the Matiang’i question but confirmed that Jubilee will field candidates in all positions in the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the party’s National Delegates Conference, he said Jubilee would either run independently or work with like-minded partners. He also stressed that the party remains committed to national unity and fair recruitment of leaders.
