Varsity student arrested over drug trafficking in Garissa
Police in Garissa County have arrested one female student in relation to the sale and distribution of narcotic drugs within an institution of higher learning. The student was arrested after being found in possession of 650 rolls of bhang.
In a statement on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the incident, indicating that the said student was operating from a hostel within the school when the police acted on intelligence and raided the facility, the rolls of Cannabis Sativa.
“Officers deployed at a higher learning institution in Garissa County yesterday acted on credible intelligence indicating that a student was involved in the sale and distribution of narcotic drugs within the school premises. Following this information, the officers conducted a targeted raid on a hostel from which the suspect was believed to be operating. During the operation, one student was arrested after being found in possession of 650 rolls of cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang,” NPS said.

NPS has also stated that the recovered bhang suggests an organised effort to supply the illegal substance, raising serious concerns about the growing presence of drugs within institutions of learning.
The person of interest was immediately placed in police custody and is expected to be charged in court with offences related to the possession and trafficking of narcotic drugs.
Drug trafficking in learning institutions
The police have, however, noted that the arrest should serve as a reminder of the increasing threat that drugs pose to young people and of drug infiltration in learning institutions.
“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing threat that drugs pose to young people and of drug infiltration in learning institutions,” NPS added.
The National Police Service has committed to remaining steadfast in its commitment to combat this menace, calling on the members of the public to always alert the authorities in instances of suspected drug trafficking for immediate action to fight the menace.
