Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has warned members of the public against circulating false information on social media linked to the devastating fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, which has claimed 16 lives and left several others injured.

In a press release on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the government expressed profound sadness following reports of the tragic fire incident in Nakuru County.

“The Government has received with deep shock and profound sadness reports of a tragic fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, in which several students are feared to have lost their lives while others sustained injuries,” read the statement in part.

At the same time, the government has called on members of the public to exercise calm and avoid spreading unverified information or disturbing images on social media.

Further explaining that disturbing images on social media could cause further trauma to the affected families, while authorities continue with rescue operations and investigations into the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, the government has confirmed that the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration and all relevant agencies are working closely together to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure appropriate action is taken.

“At this difficult hour, we stand united as a nation in solidarity with the students, teachers, and families affected by this tragedy. Further updates will be communicated through official Government channels as more verified information becomes available,” Mwaura stated.

Govt tribute to families affected

On the other hand, Mwaura conveyed the government’s heartfelt condolences to the families, parents, guardians, teachers, and students affected by the devastating incident.

“The Government immediately activated emergency response teams comprising officers from the National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, County Disaster Units, medical personnel, and fire response teams to contain the situation and provide urgent assistance,” he added.

The injured students are currently receiving treatment at nearby health facilities, while every effort is being made to account for all learners and ensure their safety.

The Government has further assured parents and the country that every available resource is being deployed to manage the situation swiftly and professionally. Government officials are already on the ground coordinating rescue efforts and supporting affected families.
