UK ambassador joins green innovation event
By Lavender Kusimba, July 28, 2025The British High Commissioner led celebrations to mark Kenya’s leadership in environmental innovation.
Earthshot Prize hosted the Kenya Connect event recently in partnership with the British High Commission and Conservation International.
The event spotlighted African-led solutions to global climate challenges and brought together key players in sustainability, including innovators, policy leaders, and climate advocates.
British High Commissioner to Kenya Neil Wigan (pictured) praised Kenya’s leadership in climate action.
“Kenya is not just participating in the global climate conversation — it’s leading it,” said Wigan.
“The innovations we celebrate tonight show the power of African ingenuity and collaboration in building a better future.”
A major announcement at the event was the partnership between two Earthshot Prize finalists, Roam (2022) and Keep IT Cool (2024 winner).
Together, they have launched Africa’s first electric cold chain delivery network, combining solar-powered refrigeration units with Kenyan-built electric motorcycles.
The innovation aims to reduce post-harvest losses, cut emissions, and enhance food security across East Africa.
Francis Nderitu, founder of Keep IT Cool, noted the wider social and economic implications of the project.
“This is not just about clean technology — it’s about empowering farmers, safeguarding public health, and creating sustainable urban economies,” he said.
Charlot Magayi, founder and CEO of Mukuru Clean Stoves, emphasised the importance of inclusive innovation. “Our people deserve clean air, healthy homes, and opportunities to thrive. Innovation should be both impactful and accessible,” she said.
Other notable speakers included Samantha Maasdorp, Acting CEO of CAP-A; Ken Ngetha, Venture Building Engagement Lead at Catalyst Fund; and Seif Hamisi, East Africa Managing Director at Conservation International.
Each underscored the importance of cross-sector partnerships and scaling climate innovations to reach underserved communities.
The evening served as a celebration and a call to action.
“By creating platforms like Kenya Connect, we are building bridges between innovation, policy, and community,” said Tim Bromfield, Vice President for Africa at Conservation International.
“This is how we scale solutions and secure the future of our planet.”
As Africa faces increasing climate-related challenges, the event reaffirmed the continent’s potential to lead in innovation, adaptation, and sustainable growth.
