Uhuru joins regional leaders for Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony
By Francis Muli, May 13, 2026Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, joined regional leaders and dignitaries in Kampala for the swearing-in ceremony of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
In a statement, Kenyatta congratulated Museveni as he began another term in office and reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Kenya and Uganda.
“Kenyatta extended his warm congratulations and best wishes to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as he begins another term in office, wishing him good health, wisdom, and continued prosperity in leading the people of Uganda,” the statement from Uhuru’s office said.
The former head of state also emphasised the strong diplomatic and economic relations shared between the two neighbouring countries.
“Kenyatta also reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties, mutual cooperation, and longstanding friendship that unites Kenya and Uganda,” the statement added.
The inauguration attracted more than 50 international delegations, including heads of state, diplomats and senior government officials from across Africa and beyond.
Ahead of the ceremony, Kenyatta attended a high-profile state dinner hosted by Museveni at the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Kampala, where regional leaders and foreign dignitaries gathered ahead of the inauguration.
Kenyatta arrived in Uganda on Monday and was received by Ambassador Katureebe Tayebwa alongside Ambassador Kipkosgei Toroitich.
Museveni’s inauguration marks the beginning of another presidential term following his re-election in Uganda’s January 2026 General Election, extending his decades-long leadership in the East African nation.
The event also underscored the close political and economic ties between Kenya and Uganda, two of East Africa’s largest trading partners whose cooperation spans infrastructure, trade, security and regional integration within the East African Community.
