The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has blocked an unauthorised website that offered voter information ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The regulator issued a public notice on January 7, 2026, explaining that the action followed a formal request from the Electoral Commission (EC).

The blocked site was linked to a civic tech group. It allowed users to locate polling stations, view voter demographics by age and gender, and access directions in local languages. The platform quickly gained popularity, particularly among young voters.

UCC ordered licensed telecom operators and internet service providers to restrict access to the site within Uganda. The action is authorised under the Uganda Communications Act. The regulator said the block is a preventive measure aimed at protecting public information systems and ensuring elections run smoothly.

“The Electoral Commission is responsible for managing voter registration data, locating polling stations, and overseeing all electoral processes,” the UCC stated. “Any platform providing these services must have proper authorisation and comply with the law.”

The UCC notice reassured citizens that the block prevents potential risks during the general elections scheduled for January 15, 2026. The regulator said it continues to work with stakeholders to maintain a secure and trusted communications environment.

The decision highlights a tension between digital innovation and official control over sensitive electoral data. Civic groups praised the website for filling gaps in the official system, saying it made information more accessible. However, authorities argued that unverified platforms could spread misinformation or misuse voter data.

Officials stressed that the action is not meant to limit access to information but to protect voters and the integrity of the electoral process. The UCC also reminded the public that using unapproved sources could result in confusion and misinformation.

UCC warns against misinformation

The UCC has also warned the public against spreading false information ahead of the elections. During a press briefing, Permanent Secretary Aminah Zawedde and UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo addressed concerns over satellite internet services and misinformation.

They stressed that responsible coverage is crucial and that sharing unverified or misleading information online is a criminal offence. Thembo reminded the public that no internet shutdown is planned and that only the EC may declare election results. Citizens were urged to verify information before sharing and to rely on licensed providers and official channels.
