Police have unearthed a car theft syndicate targeting Toyota Probox model in Baringo and Nakuru counties.

A 54-year-old man believed to be the mastermind was arrested in Ahero, Kisumu county after a driver who hails from the area spotted the car which had been stolen and alerted members of the family who informed the police who tracked down the suspect.

According to a police report, when police officers based at Ahero flagged down Peter Machuka

Nyang’au, he defied the orders prompting police to shoot at the vehicle which lost control and landed in a ditch.

The suspect, who was later handed over to police in Baringo County, was yesterday arraigned at Eldama Ravine Law Courts.

He was charged with stealing a Probox belonging to Peter Kipkwe Kibinott on March 24, 2023 at Kelewa, Mogotio Constituency.

He pleaded not guilty  and was released on a Sh1 million bond.

Among the victims of the car theft syndicate is Tom Chepsoi, a journalist, who lost his vehicle registration number KDD 814S.

Police believe that Nyangau is part of a car syndicate that has terrorized Mogotio and Rongai in Baringo and Nakuru respectively.

Chepsoi said he had packed his vehicle, also a Probox at Kimamoi village in Rongai, Nakuru county on March 4 only for it to disappear in mysterious circumstances.

“So far, not even a clue, no site of the car has been reported. We urge our friends, family and community of goodwill to be vigilant. Circulate widely. We will truly appreciate,” said Chepsoi.

Francis Chelimo, a teacher at Sinende Primary School in Soi Ward in Rongai, also lost his car, a Silver Probox KCL 453Z at Kapnyangale. The car is yet to be recovered.—Agencies
