Uasin Gishu county government has embarked on an ambitious programme to link the region’s youth to various foreign learning institutions.

More than 100 students have been facilitated with visas under the county government overseas scholarship programme and will be distributed in five universities in Finland including Laurea, Tampere, LUT, Gradia and Metropolia.

In the initiative, 56 will be joining Laurea University to study Physiotherapy and Nursing courses while another 48 will enrol at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology to study Engineering.

Expected to travel

Governor Jonathan Bii and his Deputy John Barorot yesterday met more than 300 parents whose children are expected to travel and those whose children are already studying in Finland to discuss measures that have been initiated by his administration to streamline the program.

Governor Bii assured the parents that his administration will ensure that parents become trustee members of the program, in order to have more say in the implementation and management of the program.

“I want to encourage you not to give up or lose hope. This program is very important and should be supported to benefit our children. Let’s ensure that we don’t politicise the program but find ways of solving challenges that are raised, amicably,” he said.

He was referring to claims that many youths who were under the programme in the past regime are stranded in many countries overseas due to lack of fees.

“There might be different thoughts about this program but the best thing is to liaise and make inquiries at the concerned government offices and officers,” Bii said.
