Sifuna vows to press on after Kitengela rally disrupted by tear gas
Amid a tense political atmosphere in Kitengela on Sunday, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other leaders faced disruptions during a planned public rally.
In a statement shared on X on Sunday, February 15, 2026, Sifuna said attendees were met with both intimidation and state security interventions that abruptly ended the assembly.
Speaking to his supporters after the incident, Sifuna thanked the residents for their resilience and vowed to continue mobilising despite the challenges.

“Thank You Kitengela. Despite all the harassment, intimidation and violence from this morning, you showed up. They first destroyed our dais and sound equipment in the morning, and the state goons have now teargassed a peaceful assembly and brought it to an abrupt end. We shall not relent,” Edwin Sifuna stated.
Sifuna’s team emphasised that the interruptions would not deter the broader movement and that efforts to engage citizens on key issues would continue across the region.

Sifuna also assured his followers that upcoming rallies and public consultations would be conducted with renewed determination, promising to overcome attempts at intimidation while keeping the focus on people-centred advocacy.
Sifuna vowed to stand firm, encouraging supporters to remain engaged and resilient as the campaign continues, framing the incident as a test of unity and resolve.

Police teargas Sifuna rally in Kitengela
The event, part of the Linda Mwananchi tour, was organised by a faction of opposition leaders , including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. It drew thousands of mostly young supporters to the town in Kajiado County.
Sifuna, recently removed as ODM Secretary General but insisting he still held the position, used the platform to criticise attempts to silence dissent.
Officers lobbed teargas canisters into the crowd, forcing people to scatter. Thick smoke filled the area, and videos from the scene showed supporters running. Reports indicate police also fired shots in the air and damaged the sound system and dais, abruptly ending the rally.
Sifuna responded strongly after the disruption. He thanked Kitengela residents for showing up despite what he called harassment.
