Rainfall is expected to pound most parts of the country on Monday, February 16, 2026, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned.

In a daily weather update issued on the night of Sunday, February 15, 2026, the weatherman noted that morning rains will be expected in parts of Kisumu, Kakamega, Eldoret, and the neighbouring western counties.

However, cloudy conditions breaking into sunny intervals are expected in Nairobi and the Central Highlands, with North Eastern, North Western, and the Coast expected to remain sunny.

“Morning rains in parts of Kisumu, Kakamega, Eldoret and the neighbouring western counties. Cloudy conditions expected breaking into sunny intervals in Nairobi and the Central Highlands. Mostly sunny across North Eastern, North Western and the Coast,” the Kenya Met stated.

Afternoon weather outlook

Several areas of the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley, likely in Kisii, Kericho, Kisumu, Kakamega, Narok, Nakuru, Kitale, and Eldoret, are expected to experience showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

The Weatherman also noted that afternoon showers would be expected in several areas of the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley, likely in Kisii, Kericho, Kisumu, Kakamega, Narok, Nakuru, Kitale and Eldoret.

Afternoon showers in parts of Nyeri, Meru, Embu, Nairobi, Machakos, and Makindu. Mainly sunny conditions over Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, Mander,a and the Coastal region,” the notice read.

Long rains onset

The Kenya Meteorological Department had earlier warned Kenyans living in various parts of the country to brace for long rains beginning in the second week of March this year.

According to the weather department, several parts of the country are likely to experience near-average to below-average rainfall, with variability in onset, distribution, and intensity.

Rains in Central Kenya are likely to start in the second or third week of March. Counties in these regions include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

According to the report, rainfall in the South eastern lowlands counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta is expected to begin between the third and fourth weeks of March.
