Residents of Nairobi, Kiambu, Embu, Nyandarua, Meru, and other urban centres have been advised to prepare for wet conditions and colder-than-usual nights in the coming five days.

The Kenya Meteorological Department, in its latest weekly outlook released on Saturday, January 24, 2026, forecasts a significant drop in nighttime temperatures, with some highland areas, including Nairobi, expected to record lows of about 5°C.

The department also predicts scattered afternoon rainfall, especially after January 24, alongside partly cloudy conditions.

Mornings in the capital will generally feature sunny intervals, but cloud cover is expected to build during the day, raising the chances of light showers in some parts of the city, according to the forecast.

At the same time, night-time conditions are expected to remain partly cloudy, contributing to chilly evenings and cold nights, which are unusual for Nairobi in January.

The neighbouring Kiambu County is also forecast to experience similar weather, with cool mornings, intermittent afternoon rain, and cold nighttime temperatures.

Other central highland counties, including Nyandarua, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, will also record low night temperatures, along with occasional afternoon rainfall.

The meteorologist explained that the sporadic showers being experienced in the highlands are the result of weather systems drifting in from areas east of the Rift Valley, though the rainfall is expected to remain patchy rather than widespread.

In a positive outlook for farmers in Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley, rainfall is forecast to gradually increase from Monday, January 26, 2026, with showers extending into the evening hours by midweek.

In contrast, residents of northern and north-eastern counties, including Turkana, Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, and Garissa, should brace for hot and dry weather, with daytime temperatures soaring to around 38°C.

Along the coast, counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu are expected to experience sunny and warm conditions, with temperatures reaching about 34°C and minimal chances of rainfall.

Strong northeasterly to southeasterly winds of more than 25 knots are expected across north-western, north-eastern, and coastal regions, potentially disrupting marine operations and posing risks to light structures.

Meanwhile, residents, particularly those in highland areas, are urged to monitor daily weather updates, as rapidly changing conditions could bring isolated showers even during mostly sunny weather.
