Five people are feared dead following a road accident at Salama, Makueni County, on Saturday afternoon, February 21, 2026.

The crash happened along the busy Mombasa–Nairobi highway when a matatu collided with a heavy-duty lorry.

Reports confirm that the victims were travelling in the matatu.

“More than five people have died following a horrific head-on collision between a matatu and a lorry at Salama Downtown along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway. The Saturday afternoon crash claimed lives instantly and left several others seriously injured,” the Motorists Association of Kenya posted on Facebook.

“Two of the victims were reportedly students from Emali Township travelling home for half-term. Witnesses linked the accident to poor visibility and a slippery road caused by ongoing rains.

“The Naekana PSV collided head-on with the lorry, leaving both vehicles badly damaged. Medical staff at Sultan Hamud Hospital confirmed several injured passengers are receiving treatment, with one student from Ukia Girls High School in critical condition.”

Damage to both vehicles

Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific. The matatu overturned on its side, with extensive damage to both vehicles.

Emergency teams arrived quickly, as the accident caused a major traffic jam on that section of the highway. Police officers directed traffic and worked to restore normal flow. Authorities have not released an official cause, and investigations are ongoing. No statement has been issued on the exact circumstances.

This stretch of the Mombasa–Nairobi highway sees frequent accidents. Heavy traffic, including matatus, lorries, and private cars, increases the risks. Rainy weather often makes roads slippery and reduces visibility. Drivers must take extra care in such conditions.

Local hospitals, including Sultan Hamud, handle many road crash victims. Officials confirmed that the injured are receiving care. Families of the dead now face grief and funeral arrangements.

Road safety remains a serious issue in Kenya. Speeding, overloading, and poor vehicle maintenance contribute to many crashes. Authorities urge drivers to slow down, especially during rain, and to follow traffic rules.
