Here is what you need to know in order to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
President William Ruto is today expected to officially open the African Youth Climate Assembly at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
The meeting which runs from 1st to 3rd September comes ahead of the Africa Climate Summit scheduled to take place from 4th to 6th September.
The event, co-hosted by the Kenya government and the African Union Commission, with President Ruto as the chairperson of the summit, will be attended by at least 24 Heads of State and government.
Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya says the summit will present an opportunity for Africa to showcase its resources to the world and to drive a green growth agenda through a low-carbon development pathway that enables the world to decarbonize fast and cost-effectively.
At least 30,000 delegates are expected to attend the event whose theme is “Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World.”
“The summit will be graced by over 24 Heads of State and Government, high-level representatives of development partners and international institutions, as well as subject experts while about 30,000 delegates are expected to attend,” said a Cabinet dispatch on Tuesday evening.
Former NLC boss in court
The hearing of the multi-million graft case against former chairperson of the National Lands Commission (NLC) Mohammed Swazuri and 10 other accused persons will continue today at the Milimani Anti-corruption Court.
The accused are jointly charged with conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, abuse of office and unlawful acquisition of public property.
The allegations relate to fraudulent acquisition and irregular compensation of land, which caused a loss of public funds belonging to Kenya Railways Corporation in the sum of Ksh221.4 million.
KDF recruitment
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment continues in various parts of the country.
The KDF targets to recruit Kenyans in three broad categories namely officer cadets, recruits and Defence Forces Constables in 374 recruitment centres across the 47 counties.
Prospective recruits will be undertaken through rigorous physical exercises and medical examinations to determine interviewees’ suitability to join the army.
Speaking when he launched the exercise on Monday, August 28, Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi, the Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF), implored members of the public to desist from fraud and other corruption malpractices since it violates the integrity pillar of KDF’s core values.
Lt Gen Mwangi affirmed that any bribery case will be dealt with firmly.
“We request Kenyans in their patriotic mandate to volunteer information on any suspicious activity by reporting to the recruiting teams in the ground or call hotline number +254 726 419 709 or +254 726 419 706,” Lt Gen Mwangi said.
The recruitment exercise is scheduled to close on Friday, September 8, 2023.
