Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has warned the county governments across the country, urging immediate disaster preparedness measures ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains.

In a statement on his Facebook page on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Ledama cautioned that the looming weather pattern should not be treated as a routine warning but as an urgent threat requiring swift coordinated action.

He said this poses a serious threat to lives, infrastructure, and local economies.

“Listen guys, this is very serious and you must act now or you will suffer the consequences of inaction. The coming El Niño is not a warning it is a direct threat to lives, infrastructure, and entire local economies,” he said.

Need to suspend political engagement

He called on governors to suspend political engagements and focus on preparedness, warning that several counties remain highly vulnerable based on past flooding incidents, including Nairobi, where recent heavy rains have led to deaths, destruction of homes, and displacement of families.

“Governors, stop political campaigns and focus immediately on disaster preparedness. We have already seen the danger: in Nairobi County, floods have killed residents, destroyed homes, and stranded families without warning,” he said.

The senator particularly raised concern over Narok County, noting that key constituencies including Narok West, Emurua Dikirr, and Narok South risk being cut off if infrastructure is not upgraded urgently.

He warned that critical crossing points such as Double Cross area and the Mara Bridge within the Maasai Mara Game Reserve could become impassable once river levels rise.

“In Narok County, the risk is even greater… The Double Cross area and the Mara Bridge in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve are a disaster waiting to happen. Once rivers rise, crossings will be cut off within hours, shutting down tourism and trapping people without access to help,” he warned.

World Meteorological Organisation warning

This comes as the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) warns that El Niño conditions are developing across the tropical Pacific Ocean.

According to the latest WMO weather and climate update released on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, there is an 80 per cent chance that El Niño will develop between June and August 2026.

“A new WMO El Niño/La Niña Update indicates an 80% likelihood of an El Niño event during June-August 2026,” WMO stated.

Forecast models further show that the phenomenon is likely to persist through November with a probability exceeding 90 per cent, potentially reaching moderate or strong intensity.
